Let Your Words Be Few

It’s easy to rush into prayer with many words. That’s what we were taught as children: To pray for all our relatives and present a list of requests to God. Lately, God has been challenging me with the exact opposite of that. He’s teaching me to come into his presence speechless and in awe of his greatness!

The bible says that Solomon was the wisest man. If God’s word calls him the wisest man then I want to hear what this guy has to say.  Listen to excerpts of what Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 5:

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools……..Do not be quick with your mouth…….God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few…….Therefore stand in awe of God.

If I was being honest I would have to say that the majority of my time before God consists of me talking. Obviously God wants to hear our heart, our passions, our struggles, etc. But he also wants us to come before Him with reverence and awe. Hebrews 12:28-29 says,

……and so worship God ACCEPTABLY with reverence and awe.

God’s word says our worship is acceptable when we come before him in awe; with no words. In Romans 8:26 God’s word even says that when we don’t know what to pray for, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf with groans that words cannot express. Our worship is acceptable when our words are few. Check out this video here. Understand that our powerful God created and holds all of that together. Now, enter the presence of our Creator speechless and in awe!
